The neon sign of Joe's Diner flickered three times before dying completely, plunging the corner of 5th and Main into darkness. I counted the seconds, waiting. One. Two. Three. The shadows began to move.
Not the normal kind of shadows—the ones cast by streetlights or passing cars. No, these shadows had weight. Substance. Intent. They slithered across the cracked pavement like oil, converging toward a single point just beyond the reach of the remaining streetlight.
I pulled my enchanted dagger from its sheath, the runes etched along its blade glowing a faint blue. Whatever was coming through, it wasn't friendly. It never was at midnight.
"Just once," I muttered, "I'd like to encounter a shadow entity that wants to grab coffee and discuss philosophy."
